Commonly known as a foot bunion is hallux valgus, a deformity of the big toe (it moves inward while its joint protrudes outward).

Since they are often unsightly, embarrassing and painful, let’s look at how to relieve bunions.

1. Avoiding foot bunion pain

There are a few simple steps to take to avoid suffering from foot bunions:

    – Avoid shoes with heels.

    – Put on shoes that do not compress the feet too much (avoid pointed shoes that bring the toes closer together), choose comfortable shoes.

    – Limit rubbing on the area with the help of protections available in pharmacies.

In general, protect and care for your feet.

2. Which specialist should you see?

If you are in doubt, consult a foot doctor who can give you helpful advice.

Ideally, turn to a podiatrist who can consider your overall statics and, if necessary, suggest appropriate orthopedic inserts.

Physiotherapists

Physiotherapy sessions can sometimes be prescribed to benefit from ultrasound, for example.

Splints and orthotics may also be offered to reduce the angulation of the toe.

Surgeons

Surgeons may be called upon when hallux valgus is particularly severe and disabling.

    – Minimally invasive surgery can be considered as soon as the deformity appears. It is less painful than conventional surgery but mainly chosen for aesthetic reasons (the bunion is usually not highly disabling when considered).

    – The percutaneous procedure, which takes about half an hour, consists of removing the tissue where the bunion is located, planing the bone, and then straightening the toe.

    – If the deformity is too significant, a much more extensive conventional procedure will be required, including the use of screws or pins.

Although it is now well understood, surgery should be used only as a last resort.

3. How to relieve the pain

To relieve your foot bunions naturally and simply:

    – When you get home, elevate your feet.

    – Apply an ice pack to the bunion.

    – Use an anti-inflammatory gel on an occasional basis in case of pain.

    – Use either orthotics or braces.

    – If the bunion is small, use toe spreaders to realign it gently.

4. The use of colour therapy

Colour therapy can provide excellent results in the treatment of hallux valgus.

In colour therapy, hallux valgus is considered a cold condition.

Therefore, the treatment will consist of a local application of prolonged red (4 minutes) and then brief green (50 seconds).

With this treatment, one can sometimes observe a recrudescence of the pain the day after the treatment, and it gradually diminishes until it disappears. The improvement in mobility and sometimes deformity can be spectacular in some cases.

Generally, two or three sessions per week are performed, or as often as necessary, and then occasionally if the pain is experienced.
