The Benefits of Red Wine
Red wine is always scribbled on top of my weekly grocery list. Red wine comes in many varieties, namely; Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet, Malbec, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Sangiovese, and Barbera. Wine happens to possess many health benefits when consumed with moderation.
Here is an overview of the main benefits of red wine.
Lowers the level of bad cholesterol
Red wine contains resveratrol that lowers the levels of trans fat in the body. Hence daily exercising along with some red wine, will benefit the heart, preventing heart attacks and strokes.
Regulates blood sugar level
When it comes to Type 2 Diabetes, red wine is known to lower the blood sugar level up to 24 hours. It is, therefore advisable for people with diabetes to consume red wine with moderation.
Boosts your brain power
If binge drinking is linked to mental health issues, a daily intake of two glasses of wine decreases your chances of developing depression.
Fights off a cold
Mulled wine is very popular during the winter. It brings warmth and comfort, not surprising since wine itself boosts the immune system. Drinking wine reduces the inflammation caused by a common cold since red wine contains antioxidants to fight against the disease-causing free radicals.
Reduces the risk of cancer
There is scientific evidence that resveratrol (antioxidant) in red wine can annihilate pancreatic cancer cells. The antioxidant paralyzes the energy functions of the cancer cell.
Helps you get a good body structure
Moderate wine drinking is linked to better bone density and lower body mass. The antioxidants present in wine, namely epicatechin, quercetin, and resveratrol, lower cholesterol levels supporting weight loss by burning belly fat.
Wine against dental plaque
Along with daily dental hygiene practices, red wine impedes the growth of the Streptococcus bacteria responsible for tooth decay and plaque. The polyphenols present in red wine help in removing these bacteria.
Wine prevents gallstones
Researches proved that daily wine consumption lowers the risk of gallstone formation. The risk of developing gallstones is decreased by a third as compared to nondrinkers.
Wine improves the eyesight
Resveratrol prevents the eye muscles from deteriorating as we get older. Resveratrol also proves to impede the blood vessel growth in the eyes that leads to the condition known as macular degeneration.
I wish to highlight that moderation is essential because there is a limit to how much ethanol your body can metabolize. A daily maximum of 2 glasses of wine is recommended for men and one glass for women.
