When and Why You Should Visit the Dentist

Before dental and health organizations had enough evidence, they had already set the “visit the dentist two times a year” rule. The rule has become standard and most of the time individuals do their best to follow it. But with our increasingly demanding work schedules and personal life, we’re all either looking for a way to get out of them or simply forgetting to schedule them till it’s too late. There are those who can get away with less frequent visits than most, but that is not the general trend and this will mostly be determined by a dentist’s recommendation. So, when and why should you visit the dentist?

1. Follow The Rule
If you’re showing any symptoms or not, it’s important to continuously attend appointments for two reasons. One, check-ups can help you identify any problems quickly. With early diagnosis, you can prevent tooth decay and gum problems. As minor as they may seem, if left to develop they could result in major dental concerns.

Two, regular check-ups can help with your existing dental problems. This includes things like checking that all your fillings are in good condition, and other restorative dentistry services, such as dental crowns, dental bridges, or bondings.

2. High-risk groups
Some groups may need to visit the dentist more frequently than others, as often as every 3 months, this includes:

• Smokers who are four times more likely to develop gum disease.
Pregnant women. With regular check-ups, you can identify and stop gum disease that may lead to premature birth or low birth weight.
• Diabetics who because of their disease are at greater risk of contracting oral infections, and also having a harder time with the healing process.
• People with current gum disease
• People with a weak immune response to bacterial infection
• People who tend to get cavities or build up plaque

3. Cleaner Teeth
Brushing your teeth two times a day may be the recommended standard, but sometimes it’s just not enough! With trips to the dentist, you will benefit from not only a healthier smile but a cleaner and shinier one as well. At your regular visits, your dentist may polish your teeth and clean between the gaps where your floss just can’t reach removing plaque and tartar.

Regular dentist visits are essential for a healthy body, and should be remembered no matter how busy your schedule!

  1. Thanks for elaborating how having a dentist can clean your teeth and eliminate your risks of developing teeth or gum disease. My friend is having trouble with chewing lately because of tooth pain. I hope he’d consider visiting a dentist for a checkup before it worsens.
